Usagi Yojimbo Animated Series Announced

Today, we learned that Usagi Yojimbo is getting his first cartoon series! It will be an “action-comedy series targeting six- to 11-year-olds”, and will be helmed by Dark Horse, Atomic Monster, and Stan Sakai himself. The series is being produced by the French studio Gaumont. Here is the synopsis, courtesy of Kidscreen.com:

The series follows Usagi and his pet dinosaur as the embark on adventures in 17th-century Japan.

This mentions Spot, Usagi’s classic tokage pet. I’m glad he’s in the series, since he is a great character. Also, the article mentions the world is made up of animals, so we know the series will be very faithful to the source material. I really hope more classic Usagi characters appear in the show, like Gen and Tomoe Ame. We haven’t seen either animated since the 2003 TMNT series, so I am hoping for them to show up here. I also want Yuki Matsuzaki to reprise his role as the rabbit ronin. He was great in the 2012 TMNT series, so he would be an awesome pick for Usagi’s voice in his very own show. They also mentioned wanting a toy partner, so I hope Playmates picks up the license so we can have a line of Usagi toys scaled to all the TMNT toys over the years, as well as the awesome Usagi figure released last year. All in all, though, I am very excited for this show, and can’t wait to watch it when it premieres. Salmutations, Shellheads!
